Summer programming has begun!
Maureen Korte kicked off our summer reading fun at the Ames Middle School for 3,4 and 5 graders and their families.
She shared stories about George Washington Carver. In a nutshell, according to Civil Rights on Iowa Pathways (http://www.iptv.org/iowapathways) Etta May Budd met George Washington Carver when she taught art at Simpson College in Indianola. He was enrolled in one of her art classes. He was good at painting and at gardening too. Budd encouraged Carver to study plants rather than paint them. So he enrolled at Iowa State College in Ames to study agriculture.
Another was Edna Griffin who fought for civil rights for African-American people. Again, as quoted in Iowa Pathways, in 1947 she and her husband, Dr. Stanley Griffin, moved to Des Moines. They knew that it was against Iowa law for business owners to discriminate against people based on race. In 1948 Mrs. Griffin sat down in Katz Drug Store in Des Moines. The store said that it was, "not equipped to serve colored people." Mrs. Griffin sued the owner and won in court.
She will be back today at the Ames Middle School for our younger readers and soon to be reader at 1:00 at the Ames Middle School.

It is time!
Won't be long before you are all out from school and summer fun begins. Summer fun includes signing up for the library reading program and begin to record you reading.
Which book will you begin --- will it be a read aloud with mom and dad and their favorite book from childhood-- one of my favorites from my childhood is A Cricket in Times Square by George Seldon.
You could begin with your breakfast and the cereal box in front of you or the newspaper or reading the directions for your favorite game or listening to a good book. Whatever you decide to be your first minutes - sign up and record your minutes.
